Texas sued the federal government on Friday after President Joe Biden ordered deportations of illegal immigrants halted for the first 100 days of his administration.
As one of his first acts in office, Biden halted deportations for most illegal immigrants for the first 100 days of his term as his administration looks to roll back former President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed suit against the federal government citing an agreement the state struck with the Department of Homeland Security in the final days of the Trump administration.
“In one of its first of dozens of steps that harm Texas and the nation as a whole, the Biden administration directed DHS to violate federal immigration law and breach an agreement to consult and cooperate with Texas on that law. Our state defends the largest section of the southern border in the nation. Failure to properly enforce the law will directly and immediately endanger our citizens and law enforcement personnel,” Paxton said in a <a href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/news/releases/ag-paxton-sues-biden-administration-demanding-immediate-halt-unlawful-deportation-freeze">statement</a>. “DHS itself has previously acknowledged that such a freeze on deportations will cause concrete injuries to Texas. I am confident that these unlawful and perilous actions cannot stand. The rule of law and security of our citizens must prevail.”
The agreement cited by Paxton was <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/22/politics/texas-biden-lawsuit-deportation/index.html">signed</a> by Ken Cuccinelli, who was performing the duties of the deputy secretary for DHS at the time. The agreement states that the federal government will convene with the state before making any changes to immigration policy, an agreement that, if enforceable, could bog down Biden’s attempts to relax Trump-era immigration policies.
“On its first day in office, the Biden Administration cast aside congressionally enacted immigration laws and suspended the removal of illegal aliens whose removal is compelled by those very laws,” Paxton’s <a href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/sites/default/files/images/admin/2021/Press/1%20Complaint_0.pdf">lawsuit</a> states. “In doing so, it ignored basic constitutional principles and violated its written pledge to work cooperatively with the State of Texas to address shared immigration enforcement concerns. This unlawful reversal will cause Texas immediate and irreparable harm if it is not enjoined.”
“Wednesday night, the alleged acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) ordered a halt on nearly all deportations of illegal aliens, including those whose removal was ordered following a full and fair hearing and those who are not entitled—and do not claim to be entitled—to further immigration benefits,” it continues. “If left unchallenged, DHS could re-assert this suspension power for a longer period or even indefinitely, effectively granting a blanket amnesty to illegal aliens that Congress has refused to pass time and time again. The Constitution, controlling statutes, and prior Executive pledges prevent a seismic change to this country’s immigration laws merely by memorandum.”
Biden signaled during his campaign and throughout the transition that he aimed to roll back Trump’s immigration policies. Biden’s rhetoric has motivated thousands of migrants to flock to the U.S. southern border in anticipation of more lax border policies and a chance to enter the U.S., perhaps illegally.
During the transition, Biden officials tried to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-team-to-migrant-caravan-now-isnt-a-good-time-try-coming-later">dissuade</a> migrants from coming immediately to the border, claiming “the situation at the border isn’t going to be transformed overnight,” one official said.
“We have to provide a message that help and hope is on the way, but coming right now does not make sense for their own safety … while we put into place processes that they may be able to access in the future,” the official said.

On Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) proposed postponing the impeachment trial until mid-February to give time to Trump’s legal team to come up with a defense to House impeachment managers’ accusations. The House, which passed an impeachment article alleging the former president incited a Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, expedited the article without conducting an investigation.
According to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mcconnell-proposes-impeachment-trial-be-delayed-until-mid-february">The Daily Wire</a>:
<blockquote>Under McConnell’s proposed pre-trial timeline, the impeachment article would be read before the Senate on January 28. Trump would then have to respond by February 4, and after he responds, would have another week (February 11 at the latest) to submit a pre-trial brief. The House, meanwhile, would be required to submit a pre-trial brief by February 4, and a rebuttal pre-trial brief by February 13.</blockquote>
McConnell said that Senate Republicans are “united behind the principle that the institution of the Senate, the office of the presidency, and former President Trump himself all deserve a full and fair process that respects his rights and the serious factual, legal, and constitutional questions at stake.”
“Given the unprecedented speed of the House’s process, our proposed timeline for the initial phases includes a modest and reasonable amount of additional time for both sides to assemble their arguments before the Senate would begin to hear them,” he continued. “At this time of strong political passions, Senate Republicans believe it is absolutely imperative that we do not allow a half-baked process to short-circuit the due process that former President Trump deserves or damage the Senate or the presidency.”
Legal scholars have questioned whether holding an impeachment trial after the president is out of office is legal under the Constitution. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ex-federal-judge-slams-unconstitutional-democratic-plan-to-impeach-trump-after-he-leaves-office">Michael Luttig</a>, a former judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, argued in a Jan. 12 op-ed that the Senate cannot put Trump on trial after President Joe Biden was inaugurated.
“It appears that even if the House of Representatives impeaches President Trump this week, the Senate trial on that impeachment will not begin until after Trump has left office and President-Elect Biden has become president on Jan. 20,” Luttig wrote. “That Senate trial would be unconstitutional.”
“Once Trump’s term ends on Jan. 20, Congress loses its constitutional authority to continue impeachment proceedings against him — even if the House has already approved articles of impeachment,” he said. “Therefore, if the House of Representatives were to impeach the president before he leaves office, the Senate could not thereafter convict the former president and disqualify him under the Constitution from future public office.”

House Minority Leader <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mccarthy-supports-liz-cheney-staying-in-house-gop-leadership">Kevin McCarthy</a> has continued to stand by Cheney after her decision to back impeaching Trump and voting for an article that charged Trump with inciting a violent mob that raided the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. McCarthy voted against the measure, but he has promoted a need for differing opinions within the caucus to push back against Republicans who want Cheney to step down from her leadership position.
“This is the same leadership team, with the ranking members and others, that came five seats away from winning a majority when everybody in America thought we were going to lose twenty seats,” McCarthy said on Thursday.
“We allow differences of opinion inside our conference. They’re welcomed. But I think there’s questions that need to be answered, style in which things were delivered. At the end of the day, we will unify because our policies are right,” he continued. “Do we have growing pains? Yes we will. But we will do it in our private manner of a conference that we hold every time, and we’ll have it next week.”
The push within the House GOP to push Cheney out of her spot in leadership has grown to encompass a majority of its members. According to <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/21/liz-cheneys-problems-pile-up-461218">Politico</a>:
<blockquote>The most immediate threat to Cheney — a push by Trump loyalists to oust her as conference chair — has gained momentum inside the House GOP, although the process is complicated and could still sputter out. But at least 107 Republicans, or just over a majority, have communicated to the leaders of that effort that they would support removing Cheney from leadership on a secret ballot, according to multiple GOP sources involved in the effort. Others are threatening to boycott future conference meetings if she remains in power.</blockquote>
Reps. Elise Stefanik and Lee Zeldin, both from New York, have privately signaled interest in replacing Cheney, according to Politico.
Cheney put out a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-liz-cheney-no-3-republican-in-the-house-supports-impeaching-trump">statement</a> before she voted for impeachment justifying her decision, saying of Trump’s actions on Jan. 6, “There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.”
“The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack. Everything that followed was his doing,” she continued. “None of this would have happened without the President. The President could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not.&#8221;
House Freedom Caucus Chair Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-freedom-caucus-chair-calls-to-oust-liz-cheney">Andy Biggs</a> (R-AZ) called for Cheney’s removal on Jan. 12, one of the first lawmakers to publicly do so.
“I don’t think she should be the chair of the Republican conference anymore,” Biggs said in an interview on Fox News. “The reality is she’s not representing the conference; she’s not representing the Republican ideals.”

National Guardsmen were dispatched to the nation’s capital weeks ago to handle security in the lead up to the inauguration following a riot that breached the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6. Thousands of guardsmen have patrolled Washington, D.C., and been forced to sleep on the floors of federal buildings.
On Thursday, U.S. Capitol Police officials kicked thousands of guardsmen out of the federal buildings where they had been resting and relegated to parking garages. As <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/21/national-guard-troops-vacate-capitol-461220">Politico</a> reports:
<blockquote>One unit, which had been resting in the Dirksen Senate Office building, was abruptly told to vacate the facility on Thursday, according to one Guardsman. The group was forced to rest in a nearby parking garage without internet reception, with just one electrical outlet, and one bathroom with two stalls for 5,000 troops, the person said. Temperatures in Washington were in the low 40s by nightfall.</blockquote>
Hours later and after outcry from numerous elected officials, the guardsmen were allowed back into the buildings to rest and the Capitol Police apologized for the incident.
“The troops who had been taking rest breaks outside and in parking garages on Capitol Police orders have been given an apology and are being moved back to the Capitol complex and Capitol Visitor Center,” freshman Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI) <a href="https://twitter.com/RepMeijer/status/1352460692725628931">tweeted</a>.
On Monday, Abbott threatened to “never” send Texas National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., again over reports that the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-vetting-25000-troops-deployed-to-biden-inauguration">Defense Department and FBI</a> were screening the troops for extremist ties. As <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gov-abbott-rips-loyalty-screening-in-place-for-troops-at-biden-inauguration">The Daily Wire</a> reports:

Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrat-steve-cohen-suggests-white-male-national-guardsmen-could-pose-threat-to-bidens-life">Steve Cohen</a> (D-TN) suggested on Monday that any members of the National Guard who voted for former President Donald Trump should be scrutinized as people who “might want to do something” at Biden’s inauguration.
“You know, I was thinking, the [National] Guard is 90 some odd percent I believe male, only about 20 percent of white males voted for Biden. You got to figure that in the Guard which is predominately more conservative, that I see that on my social media and we know it,” Cohen said on CNN. “There’s probably not more than 25 percent of the people that are there protecting us who voted for Biden. The other 75 percent are in the class that would be the large class of folks who might want to do something.”

President Joe Biden will keep FBI Director Chris Wray at his post for the foreseeable future, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki announced on Thursday.
Psaki sent out a tweet clarifying comments she made at a Wednesday press briefing. During the presidential transition, Biden’s team had pledged to keep Wray at his post if former President Donald Trump did not fire the FBI head before the inauguration.
“I caused an unintentional ripple yesterday so wanted to state very clearly President Biden intends to keep FBI Director Wray on in his role and he has confidence in the job he is doing,” Psaki said.

Wray was often a target of criticism for Trump last year. As <a href="https://www.axios.com/biden-christopher-wray-trump-fbi-f9b3e6ae-331c-47e6-89f7-54e549cdff5b.html">Axios</a> notes, “Trump always distrusted the FBI and the intelligence community, and was angered by Wray&#8217;s perceived failure to punish those involved in the Russia investigation and to investigate Hunter Biden&#8217;s foreign business dealings.”
House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-CA) praised Biden’s decision to keep Wray on board and allow him to finish out his 10-year term, of which about 6 years are left.
“Such terms, which transcend administrations, were intended to insulate a director from the kind of improper personal or political considerations that led Donald Trump to fire former Director James Comey,” Schiff said.
In September, Wray testified in the House that his biggest concern surrounding the 2020 election was the spread of “misinformation.” Wray’s answer earned a rebuke from then-President Trump, who had been questioning the security of an election conducted with mail-in ballots.
Wray also pointed to Russia as “very active” in working to influence the election against Biden. The then-president took issue with Wray failing to mention China, as well.
“Obviously, China is at the top of the list,” Trump <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2020/09/18/trump-attacks-fbi-director-wray-over-russia-election-testimony/5826614002/">said</a> at the time. “And I think Russia and North Korea and many other countries can be talked about. But China would be at the top of that list, so I don&#8217;t know why that&#8217;s not mentioned.”
At a Senate hearing the next week, Wray again <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-fbi/white-house-slams-fbi-chief-wray-over-voter-fraud-testimony-idUSKCN26G23B">rankled</a> Trump when he testified that he had not seen evidence of a “coordinated national voter fraud effort” ahead of the election. Then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows slammed Wray the following day, saying “With all due respect to Director Wray, he has a hard time finding emails in his own FBI, let alone figuring out whether there’s any kind of voter fraud.”
On Thursday, House Oversight and Reform Committee chair Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) sent a letter to Wray demanding that he conduct a “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-oversight-chair-wants-a-robust-examination-of-twitter-alternative-parler">robust examination</a>” of the social media platform Parler.

Canadian lawmakers, including the country’s prime minister, bashed the United States on Wednesday after President Joe Biden rescinded a permit for a pipeline to ship oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast.
Biden took office on Wednesday and, as one of his first acts, rescinded approval for the Keystone XL pipeline that former President Donald Trump had green-lighted in 2017. The pipeline has long been a target of environmental activists and Democratic politicians looking to stop the use of fossil fuels.
“While we welcome the President’s commitment to fight climate change, we are disappointed but acknowledge the President’s decision to fulfill his election campaign promise on Keystone XL,” Trudeau said in a statement, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2021/01/20/canadian-pm-trudeau-disappointed-at-biden-plan-to-dash-keystone-xl/">New York Post</a>.
“Canada is the single-largest supplier of energy to the United States, contributing to U.S. energy security and economic competitiveness, and supporting thousands of jobs on both sides of the border,” he continued. “Workers in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and across Canada will always have our support.”
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said he was “deeply disturbed” by Biden’s decision to stop work on the $8 billion project. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-reportedly-plans-to-nix-keystone-xl-permit-on-day-one">Kenney had threatened</a> legal action earlier in the week after reports of Biden’s intent to kill the pipeline surfaced.
“This is a gut punch for the Canadian and Alberta economies. Sadly it is an insult directed at the United States’ most important ally and trading partner,” Kenney told a news conference, according to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-usa-biden-keystone-idUKKBN29Q0EZ">Reuters</a>.
TC Energy Corp., an Alberta-based company, announced it had suspended work on the Keystone XL pipeline on Wednesday ahead of Biden’s inauguration and in anticipation of the U.S. president’s revocation of the pipeline’s permit. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said at the time that TC Energy’s suspension of work was “incredibly troubling.”
“Now is the time for our nations to strengthen our trading relationship, not erect further barriers to collaborative and sustainable development,” Moe said in a statement, according to the <a href="https://financialpost.com/commodities/energy/tc-energy-halts-keystone-xl-pipeline">Financial Post</a>.
The Keystone Pipeline System runs from Alberta, Canada, through North Dakota to oil refineries in Illinois and Texas. The Keystone XL addition is under construction in Canada and would have carried over 830,000 barrels of crude oil a day from Canada through North Dakota to Nebraska. From Nebraska, existing pipelines would carry the crude to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) asserted that former FBI director James Comey should be imprisoned for abusing his power as the head of the federal investigative agency.
Paul appeared on Fox News on Wednesday during coverage of President Joe Biden’s inauguration. After a question from Fox anchor Bill Hemmer, Paul tore into Comey for saying that the Republican Party needed to be “burned down or changed” after President Trump left the White House.
“When we start taking advice from Comey, a notorious liar, a guy who ruined the FBI, a guy -who used the enormous power of government to go after his political opponent, Donald Trump, I think when we started taking his advice, we’re taking the wrong advice,” Paul <a href="https://thefederalist.com/2021/01/20/rand-paul-im-not-going-to-listen-to-comey-he-should-be-in-prison/">said</a>. “And so I don’t plan on listening to anything from Comey. In fact, I think Comey should be in prison for the things that he did.”
On Tuesday, The Guardian published an interview with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/comey-the-republican-party-needs-to-be-burned-down-or-changed">Comey</a> in which the former FBI head called for the GOP to reform itself, and placed blame for the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol on then-President Trump. Comey called for the creation of a “9/11-type commission” to investigate the riot.
“I was sickened to watch an attack on the literal and symbolic heart of our democracy, and, as a law enforcement person, I was angered. I am mystified and angry that Capitol Hill wasn’t defended,” Comey said. “It’s a hill! If you wanted to defend it, you could defend it, and for some reason it was not defended. I think that’s a 9/11-size failure and we’re going to need a 9/11-type commission to understand it so that we don’t repeat it.”
The former FBI head said that the Republican Party is “built on lies and racism and know-nothingism.”
“The Republican Party needs to be burned down or changed. Something is shifting and I’m hoping it’s the fault breaking apart, a break between the Trumpists and those people who want to try and build a responsible conservative party, because everybody should know that we need one,” Comey said. “Who would want to be part of an organization that at its core is built on lies and racism and know-nothingism? It’s just not a healthy political organization.”
Last week, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gop-leadership-destroy-republican-party-trigger-mass-exodus-vote-convict-trump">Paul</a> advised Republicans against siding with the ongoing push to impeach and convict Trump for allegedly inciting the riot at the Capitol, even after he has left office. House Democrats and a handful of Republicans impeached Trump last week, and the article has been sent to the Senate for trial.
“I just don’t understand how they can be moving forward with this,” Paul said on Fox News last week. “And look, I’m not just saying I’m for everything President Trump has done. I was for seating the electors because I think Congress shouldn’t overturn the state electors. But at the same time, the thing they are doing is an overreaction, and if they think they’re going to have a positive feeling from the public when they’re going to go through a partisan impeachment again, I think that’s absolutely insane and wrongheaded.”

Pro basketball player Kyrie Irving bought a house for the family of George Floyd, another pricey gift for Floyd&#8217;s relatives since he died in police custody in May.
Irving, a guard for the Brooklyn Nets, reportedly gave the family the money to purchase the home about five or six months ago, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/30737461/brooklyn-nets-kyrie-irving-bought-house-family-george-floyd-former-nba-player-stephen-jackson-says">ESPN</a>. The gift was first revealed by Stephen Jackson, a former NBA player and friend of the late Floyd.

Floyd died in police custody after being arrested on Memorial Day. His death ignited <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/riots-looting-that-followed-george-floyds-death-could-cost-2-billion-most-expensive-incident-in-insurance-history">riots</a> across the county and calls to &#8220;defund&#8221; police departments over allegations of systemic racism. The arresting officers in the Floyd case were responding to a call about a man attempting to pass counterfeit currency. During the arrest, one now-fired officer, Derek Chauvin, placed his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes before Floyd was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.
An autopsy of Floyd revealed that he had methamphetamines and a potentially lethal amount of fentanyl in his system at the time of the arrest. Chief Hennepin County Medical Examiner Dr. Andrew Baker found “no physical evidence suggesting” that Floyd died from asphyxiation, though he ruled Floyd’s death a homicide, according to court records. As <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/medical-examiner-concluded-george-floyd-likely-died-of-fentanyl-overdose-court-docs-reveal">The Daily Wire</a> reported in August:
<blockquote>New court documents have uncovered two memorandums, dated May 26 and June 1, that suggest Chief Hennepin County Medical Examiner Dr. Andrew Baker concluded George Floyd likely died from a fentanyl overdose and found “no physical evidence suggesting” that he died of asphyxiation.
“AB (Andrew Baker) said that if Mr. Floyd had been found dead in his home (or anywhere else) and there were no other contributing factors he would conclude that it was an overdose death,” says a memo dated June 1, outlining a May 31 virtual with Dr. Baker.
The memos seemingly run contrary to the Armed Forces medical examiner and Hennepin County medical examiner’s final conclusion that Floyd’s death was a homicide.</blockquote>
Chauvin, along with three other former officers, were fired from the Minneapolis police department over Floyd’s death. Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The three other ex-officers were each charged with aiding and abetting each crime.
Chauvin is set to stand trial in March after a judge split the trials of Chauvin and the other defendants. As <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-approves-separate-trial-for-ex-minneapolis-police-officer-who-kneeled-on-george-floyds-neck">The Daily Wire</a> reports:
<blockquote>Prosecutors argued against holding two trials, while the defense attorneys for at least one former officer, Thomas Lane, said that holding a separate trial for Chauvin would ultimately be better for his own client.
According to The Associated Press: “Legal observers say the change benefits Chauvin’s co-defendants, who will get a preview of what the state’s witnesses will say and more time to prepare. They’ll also blame Chauvin, who won’t be on trial with them to push back.”</blockquote>

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) urged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to denounce the House’s second impeachment push against President Trump as “unconstitutional.”
Graham made his call to the GOP leader in an appearance on <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/lindsey-graham-mitch-mcconnell-second-trump-impeachment-effort">Fox News</a> on Tuesday night. Graham said that McConnell needed to “stand up and fight back” against the Democrat-led push to oust Trump from office even as Trump is set to leave the White House on Wednesday as President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in as president.
“What we need right now is Sen. McConnell to unequivocally say the second impeachment of Donald Trump after he leaves office is not only unconstitutional, it is bad for the country,” Graham told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “Stand up and fight back.”
Graham, who currently chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, emphasized that unless the GOP stands together against the impeachment push, the country and the Republican Party may fracture.
“Our country needs to heal,” he continued. “A second impeachment of Donald Trump after he leaves office won’t heal the country, it will further divide the country.”
“As to the Republican Party, if we throw in the towel, or are perceived to having thrown in the towel, and not fighting against this impeachment, the Republican Party, as Rand Paul said, will ‘crack up,’” Graham said.
The House voted to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-democrat-controlled-house-votes-to-impeach-trump">impeach</a> Trump for a second time last week, passing an article that accused the president of inciting rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Trump will have left the White House before the Senate can hold trial over the impeachment article, leaving questions over whether the upper chamber can legally convict a president after he has already left office.
McConnell rebuked the president during a speech on the Senate floor on Tuesday, claiming that Trump and others “provoked” the crowd that later stormed the Capitol building through “lies” about the election.
“The last time the Senate convened, we had just reclaimed the Capitol from violent criminals who tried to stop congress from doing our duty. The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people,” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mitch-mcconnell-trump-provoked-capitol-rioters-spread-lies-about-election">McConnell</a> said. “And they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like.”

Former Florida Department of Health worker Rebekah Jones turned herself over to authorities on Sunday and was arrested for allegedly getting unauthorized access into the state’s emergency messaging system.
Jones turned herself in to the Leon County Detention Facility on Sunday evening after a warrant was put out for her arrest. She was arrested and charged with unauthorized access of a state computer system. The felony charge carries a sentence of up to 5 years in prison if she is convicted. She exited the jail the next day after posting bail, according to the <a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-politics/2021/01/18/rebekah-jones-jailed-accused-of-illegally-accessing-emergency-message-system/">Tampa Bay Times</a>.
Prosecutors claim that Jones logged into a state database and downloaded contact information for roughly 19,000 Florida residents. The contact information was given to the state “for emergency contact purposes.”
Jones has maintained her innocence.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-fired-florida-data-analyst-praised-by-media-has-home-raided-over-alleged-hacking">raided</a> Jones’ home in December after an emergency message was sent to thousands of Floridians that read: “Speak up before another 17,000 people are dead. You know this is wrong. You don’t have to be a part of this. Be a hero. Speak out before it’s too late.”
Jones had previously worked for the state department of health on the team that ran its coronavirus dashboard, providing updated information on cases, deaths, and other statistics from across the state. Jones was fired from her position in May, claiming that she was targeted after refusing to “manually change data to drum up support for the plan to reopen.”
The former health department worker’s claim ignited an uproar in national media, and Florida Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/media-target-desantis-after-data-analyst-is-fired-desantis-dismisses-quotes-email-from-employee">Ron DeSantis</a> was criticized for allegedly hiding necessary data on the pandemic from the public. Notably, Florida’s coronavirus data has received praise from experts such as Dr. Deborah Birx, who lead the White House’s response to the coronavirus.
DeSantis responded to allegations that the state was attempting to hide the impact of the coronavirus on his state, asserting that Jones was fired after “repeated course of insubordination … including her unilateral decisions to modify the Department’s COVID-19 dashboard without input or approval from the epidemiological team or her supervisors.”
“Accuracy and transparency are always indispensable, especially during an unprecedented public health emergency such as COVID-19,” the governor continued in a statement. “Having someone disruptive cannot be tolerated during this public pandemic, which led the Department to determine that it was best to terminate her employment.”
DeSantis added to his remarks while speaking to a reporter who questioned him on Jones’ firing.
“She’s not a data scientist. She’s somebody that’s got a degree in journalism, communication &amp; geography,” DeSantis said. “She is not involved in collating any data; she does not have the expertise to do that. She is not an epidemiologist; she is not the chief architect of our web portal; that is another false statement, and what she was doing was she was putting data on the portal which the scientists didn’t believe was valid data. So she didn’t listen to the people who were her superiors; she had many people above her in the chain of command, and so then she was dismissed because of that and because of a bunch of different reasons about how she did.”
Jones had claimed that the December raid on her house was retaliation for her speaking out. According to the affidavit of the raid, the state received a warrant to search her house after tracking down the message’s sender to her IP address.

The United States declared that China is committing crimes against humanity and genocide in its treatment of the country’s Uyghur population in the Xinjiang region.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement on Tuesday with the harsh condemnation of China’s behavior, capping off a years-long escalation in tensions between China and the Trump administration as President Trump prepares to leave office.
“I believe this genocide is ongoing, and that we are witnessing the systematic attempt to destroy Uighurs by the Chinese party-state,” Pompeo said, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/19/us/politics/trump-china-xinjiang.html">The New York Times</a>. Chinese officials are “engaged in the forced assimilation and eventual erasure of a vulnerable ethnic and religious minority group.”
The determination kicks off a series of follow-up actions within the U.S. State Department and may force President-elect Joe Biden to take a tougher line on China after he assumes office on Wednesday. As the Times reported:
<blockquote>The determination of atrocities is a rare action on the part of the State Department, and could lead the United States to impose more sanctions against China under the new administration of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., who said last year through a spokesman that the policies by Beijing amounted to “genocide.” Other nations or international institutions could follow suit in formally criticizing China over its treatment of its minority Muslims and taking punitive measures. The determination also prompts certain reviews within the State Department.</blockquote>
The Chinese government, controlled by the Chinese Communist Party, is generally secretive about its operations in its northwest territory, especially as its operations relate to the local Uyghur population and other ethnic minorities. The state has claimed that massive camps set up in the region are used as education centers to help Uyghurs assimilate to Chinese culture.
Investigations and eye-witness accounts show that the camps are actually centers of abuse and sterilization, among other atrocities. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/report-china-keeping-millions-muslims-massive-emily-zanotti">China</a> has been accused by experts and others of running “concentration camps” in an attempt to kill off the minority populations in the region.
According to a June report from The Jamestown Foundation, Chinese officials working the camps have forced pregnant Uyghur women to have violent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/creeping-genocide-china-is-forcing-abortions-and-birth-control-on-thousands-of-minorities">abortions</a> that often leave the women sterile. The aggressive abortion campaign has caused birth rates to plummet in parts of Xinjiang.
“Natural population growth in Xinjiang has declined dramatically; growth rates fell by 84 percent in the two largest Uyghur prefectures between 2015 and 2018, and declined further in 2019. For 2020, one Uyghur region set an unprecedented near-zero population growth target: a mere 1.05 per [thousand], compared to an already low 11.45 per [thousand] in 2018. This was intended to be achieved through ‘family planning work,’” the report said.
“It’s genocide, full stop. It’s not immediate, shocking, mass-killing on the spot type genocide, but it’s slow, painful, creeping genocide,” said Joanne Smith Finley, a university lecturer in the United Kingdom who specializes in the Xinjiang region. “These are direct means of genetically reducing the Uighur population.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) accused religious Americans who cast votes for President Donald Trump of selling out the United States over the issue of abortion.
Pelosi appeared on a special episode of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s <a href="https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-you-me-hillary-clinton-71671764/episode/bonus-episode-house-speaker-nancy-pelosi-76369703/">podcast</a>, “You and Me Both,” on Monday to discuss the Capitol riot and the incoming Biden administration. During the roughly 30-minute conversation, Clinton and Pelosi reflected on what brought Trump to the White House, casting blame on religious Americans and their opposition to abortion.
“Now, there&#8217;s one other element that I have been talking about for a long time that gives me great grief as a Catholic. I think that Donald Trump is president because of the issue of a woman&#8217;s right to choose,” Pelosi said. “When he signed that paper saying, &#8220;These are the judges that I will appoint,&#8221; that was the dog whistle to the Evangelicals, to the Catholics, and all the rest. A woman will not have the right to choose. And when you see the polls about impeachment now, 80 percent think what happened was wrong; 70-some percent said he&#8217;s responsible, but 40-some percent don&#8217;t think he should be impeached. Well, why? One issue: abortion.”
“And that is enough,” Pelosi added. “When you take the greed of those who want their tax cut, that&#8217;s probably a small number, but nonetheless a number, and then you take the abortion issue – and many of these people are very good people; that&#8217;s just their point of view. But they were willing to sell the whole democracy down the river for that one issue.”
Clinton followed up and accused pro-life politicians of using a misunderstanding of Catholicism to “obtain and use power” by capitalizing on many Americans’ condemnation of abortion. The two women agreed that if someone is really against abortion, they should welcome contraception.
“And, you know, one of the terrible ironies of their position is that starting in the 90s under Democratic presidents, the abortion rate went way down. And with proper contraception and education and a stigma-free conversation, the numbers can continue to go way down,” Clinton said. “So, what&#8217;s really incredibly sad is how those who, in my opinion and experience, do not view this issue as a priority, have used the legitimate questions, concerns and, yes, understanding of faith, to obtain and use power.”
Later on in the podcast, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/all-roads-lead-to-putin-clinton-pelosi-float-conspiracy-theory-that-putin-played-role-in-capitol-riot">Clinton and Pelosi</a> floated a conspiracy theory that Russian President Vladimir Putin was behind the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) want a commission to investigate an unsupported allegation that President Donald Trump worked with Russian President Vladimir Putin to orchestrate a Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Clinton began: “I hope historically we will find out who [Trump is] beholden to, who pulls his strings. I would love to see his phone records to see whether he was talking to Putin the day that the insurgents invaded our Capitol. But we now know that not just him, but his enablers, his accomplices, his cult members, have the same disregard for democracy.”
Clinton continued, asking the House speaker if she thinks “we need a 9/11-type commission to investigate and report everything that they can pull together and explain what happened?”
“I do,” Pelosi responded. “To your point of who is he beholden to, as I&#8217;ve said over and over, as I said to him in that picture with my blue suit as I was leaving, what I was saying to him as I was pointing, rudely, at him: ‘With you, Mr. President, all roads lead to Putin.’ I don&#8217;t know what Putin has on him politically, financially, or personally, but what happened last week was a gift to Putin, because Putin wants to undermine democracy in our country and throughout the world.”
“And these people, unbeknownst to them, maybe, are Putin puppets,” Pelosi added. “They were doing Putin’s business when they did that at the incitement of an insurrection by the president of the United States.”
Unsupported allegations and conspiracy theories about Trump’s ties to Putin have dogged the president for his entire term. Ex-special counsel <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/8-things-you-need-know-about-mueller-report-ben-shapiro">Robert Mueller</a> investigated allegations that the Trump campaign worked with Russian agents to influence the 2016 election. Mueller issued his report in April 2019 knocking down those claims. The report states:
<blockquote>Although the investigation established that the Russian government perceived it would benefit from a Trump presidency and worked to secure that outcome, and that the Campaign expected it would benefit electorally from information stolen and released through Russian efforts, the investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.</blockquote>
Still, Clinton and others have continually promoted the conspiracy that Trump has worked alongside Putin, or even as a Kremlin agent, to undermine the United States.
Pelosi went on to say that members of Congress should also be held accountable if they are found to have been working with the rioters planning to storm the Capitol by giving tours with the purpose of allowing rioters to scope out the building. The charge that members of Congress supported the rioting in the Capitol is unsupported and also borders on conspiracy.
“So, we&#8217;re not waiting for the commission, but the commission will have a bigger agenda and will get to the bottom of what complicity members of Congress have in all of this. And if they did, they should be prosecuted, as well as others,” Pelosi said.

California state health officials ordered providers to temporarily stop administering a Moderna coronavirus vaccine after a group of people appeared to have an allergic reaction at one clinic.
California state epidemiologist Dr. Erica Pansent issued the notice on Sunday “out of an extreme abundance of caution.” The order effects roughly 330,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine against COVID-19 and 287 providers that received units.
&#8220;Our goal is to provide the COVID vaccine safely, swiftly and equitably,&#8221; Pan said in a <a href="https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/OPA/Pages/NR21-021.aspx">statement</a>. “A higher-than-usual number of possible allergic reactions were reported with a specific lot of Moderna vaccine administered at one community vaccination clinic. Fewer than 10 individuals required medical attention over the span of 24 hours.”
“Out of an extreme abundance of caution and also recognizing the extremely limited supply of vaccine, we are recommending that providers use other available vaccine inventory and pause the administration of vaccines from Moderna Lot 041L20A until the investigation by the CDC, FDA, Moderna and the state is complete. We will provide an update as we learn more,” Pan added.
The California Department of Public Health noted that a handful of vaccine recipients appeared to be experiencing a “possible severe allergic reaction” to the vaccine.
“All appeared to be experiencing a possible severe allergic reaction during the standard observation period – a type of adverse event that the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/safety/allergic-reaction.html">CDC reports</a> some people have experienced when receiving a COVID-19 vaccine,” the health department said in a news release. “While no vaccine or medical procedure is without risk, the risk of a serious adverse reaction is very small. While less data exists on adverse reactions related to the Moderna vaccine, a similar vaccine shows that the expected rate of anaphylaxis is approximately 1 in 100,000.”
The Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed greatly reduced the time creating, testing, and approving coronavirus vaccines has taken, but the speed at which the vaccine arrived has also prompted some skepticism among Americans. Across states such as California, Ohio, and Texas, front-line workers are refusing to take the vaccine in large numbers.
In December, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said that roughly 60% of nursing home workers had opted out of taking the vaccine even though they regularly deal with the elderly, the group at the highest risk for COVID-19. In New York City, about half of EMS workers have also opted against getting the vaccine.

Hawley’s original publisher backed out of the deal, citing the riot and accusing the senator of playing a “role” in the attack on the Capitol. Reporting suggests that the protest at the Capitol on Jan. 7 was organized over social media weeks in advance of the Electoral College vote. During the riot, Hawley tweeted out a statement condemning the violence and calling for the perpetrators to be prosecuted.
“Thank you to the brave law enforcement officials who have put their lives on the line. The violence must end, those who attacked police and broke the law must be prosecuted, and Congress must get back to work and finish its job,” Hawley said in a Jan. 6 <a href="https://twitter.com/SenHawleyPress/status/1346931191732203529">message</a>.
Simon &amp; Schuster dropped <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hawley-blasts-simon-schuster-for-canceling-his-book-following-capitol-riots">Hawley</a> the next day.
“After witnessing the disturbing, deadly insurrection that took place on Wednesday in Washington, D.C., Simon &amp; Schuster has decided to cancel publication of Senator Josh Hawley’s forthcoming book,” the publisher said.
“We did not come to this decision lightly,” it continued. “As a publisher it will always be our mission to amplify a variety of voices and viewpoints: at the same time we take seriously our larger public responsibility as citizens, and cannot support Senator Hawley after his role in what became a dangerous threat to our democracy and freedom.”
Hawley hit back at the publishing house, accusing it of launching a “direct attack on the First Amendment” and threatening legal action.
“This could not be more Orwellian. Simon &amp; Schuster is canceling my contract because I was representing my constituents, leading a debate on the Senate floor on voter integrity, which they have now decided to redefine as sedition,” the Missouri senator said in a statement.
“Let me be clear, this is not just a contract dispute. It’s a direct assault on the First Amendment. Only approved speech can now be published. This is the Left looking to cancel everyone they don’t approve of,” he added. “I will fight this cancel culture with everything I have. We’ll see you in court.”

“We are horrified and opposed to the events at the Capitol and all who supported and incited the actions. In light of those events and for the safety of our guests and team members, we have informed the host of the Feb. fundraiser that it will no longer be held at Loews Hotels,” the hospitality company said on Saturday.

The transition team for President-elect Joe Biden is warning thousands of Honduran immigrants flocking to the U.S. border seeking entry that they may end up waiting in Mexico for a while before their asylum claims can be processed.
An official with the transition team told <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/incoming-biden-administration-migrant-caravan-don-t-come-you-won-n1254550">NBC News</a> that the incoming administration was going to prioritize immigrants that have already filed claims and who are currently staying just across the border in Mexico under the Trump administration’s Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP). The MPP requires that those seeking asylum must stay in northern Mexico while their claims are processed in the U.S.
“The situation at the border isn’t going to be transformed overnight,” the anonymous Biden team official told NBC News. “There’s help on the way, but now is not the time to make the journey.”
“We have to provide a message that help and hope is on the way, but coming right now does not make sense for their own safety … while we put into place processes that they may be able to access in the future,” the official said.
Thousands of migrants have begun traveling to the United States with the expectation that Biden will relax strict border policies put in place by President Donald Trump. A caravan of about 9,000 Honduran migrants is currently working its way to the U.S. border. On Friday, 2,000 members of the caravan overwhelmed Guatemalan authorities and pushed through border checkpoints without presenting identification. As <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-migrant-caravan-forms-in-honduras-looking-to-make-the-deadly-journey-to-the-united-states">The Daily Wire</a> reports:

In Mexico, the country’s National Immigration Institute “posted videos showing hundreds of agents and National Guard members drilling on the southern border. It said the agents are ‘keeping vigilant in the states of southern Mexico … to enforce the immigration law.’”</blockquote>
U.S. Customs and Border Protection acting Commissioner Mark Morgan tried to deter the migrant caravan last week, telling the migrants that the trip north would &#8220;waste your time and money.”
“The dangerous journey both puts you in harm&#8217;s way and endangers the lives and health of those in the US and regional countries through the potential spread of Covid-19,” Morgan said.
The Biden team reportedly intends to prioritize millions of illegal immigrants already in the U.S. during his first days in office. He plans to offer legal status to about 11 million illegal immigrants. Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) asserted that the Capitol riot last week may not have happened had politicians taken a stronger stand against Black Lives Matter riots over the summer.
McClintock made the allegation during a House debate prior to the vote to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-democrat-controlled-house-votes-to-impeach-trump">impeach</a> President Trump for the second time, when he slammed the Democrats&#8217; impeachment article and said they should prepare to be held to the same standard of accountability they just set.

Holding rioters accountable for their actions is the answer, and we are,” McClintock said. “And if we’d prosecuted BLM and Antifa rioters with the same determination these last six months, this incident may not have happened at all.”
Later on in his speech, he warned Democrats and a handful of Republicans who voted for the impeachment article, which accused the president of inciting an insurrection, that they would be held to the same standard.
“Any member of this body gives an impassioned speech, and the lunatic fringe of their movement takes license from it, be prepared to answer for this new precedent that we established today,” McClintock continued. “Now, I could cite many provocative speeches made by Democrats that directly preceded violence this summer, but we’ve already had enough of that.”

On Tuesday, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chris-cuomo-don-lemon-claim-blm-justified-capitol-hill-riot">CNN</a> anchors Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon said that making comparisons between the Capitol riot and the Black Lives Matter riots amounted to “whataboutism” and that the riots over the summer were based on “facts,” which separates them from the riot at the Capitol.
“I’m sick of people comparing. You can’t compare what happened this summer to what happened at the Capitol. It’s two different things,” Lemon said on Tuesday.
“One is built on people, on racial justice, on criminal justice, right, on reform, on police not beating up – or police treating people of color differently than they do whites. Okay? That is not a lie. Those are facts. Go look at them. What happened at the Capitol was built on a lie perpetrated by the president and the people who support him,” he added. “So, just on that one merit, if you want to call it, it’s not comparable. That things are not comparable. So they should not be doing it. And stop this whataboutism.”
Cuomo said that bringing up the Black Lives Matter riots in context with the Capitol riot is meant to distract and done by people who “do not care” that the Capitol was stormed on Jan. 6.
“The truth is, as soon as somebody says to you, Don, they are aware of what happened last week – ‘but this summer’ – as soon as the words come out of their mouth, they do not care about what happened last week,” Cuomo said.

CNN anchor Don Lemon made sweeping allegations that Americans who voted for President Donald Trump stood with “the Klan” and “Nazis” on Wednesday.
The CNN host made the remarks during an exchange with fellow network anchor Chris Cuomo. Cuomo asked Lemon to respond to assertions that people who voted for Trump should not be lumped together with rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol last week, many of whom are being hunted by federal authorities for a wide range of criminal charges.
“Now what you hear is, ‘Well, you can’t say that everybody who voted for Trump is like the people who went into the Capitol.&#8217; Response?” Cuomo asked.
“If you are on that side, you need to think about the side you are on. I am never on the side of the Klan. Principled people, conservative or liberal, never on the Klan’s side. Principled people, conservative or liberal, never on the Nazi’s side,” Lemon responded, lumping together over 74 million Americans who voted to re-elect the president with white supremacists and Nazis.
“Principled people, conservative or liberal, never on the side that treats their fellow Americans as less than, that says that your fellow Americans should not exist. That says your fellow Americans should be in a concentration camp, or sides with slavery, or sides with any sort of bigotry,” Lemon added.
Cuomo then prodded: “Right, and if they say, ‘I don’t agree with those people, I just like Trump’s policies?’
“Well then get out of the crowd with them. Get out of the crowd with them,” Lemon responded. “You’re in the crowd who voted for Trump. If you voted for Trump, you voted for the person who the Klan supported. You voted for the person who Nazis support. You voted for the person who the alt-right supports. That’s the crowd that you are in.&#8221;
“You voted for the person who incited a crowd to go into the Capitol and potentially take the lives of lawmakers, took the lives of police officers, took the lives, innocent lives who were there on the Capitol that day,” Lemon continued. “You voted on that side and the people in Washington are continuing to vote on that side.”

While both hosts have condemned the Capitol riot that took place last week by Trump supporters, the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chris-cuomo-don-lemon-claim-blm-justified-capitol-hill-riot">CNN anchors</a> have used their platforms to excuse to some extent the actions of Black Lives Matter rioters that burned and looted businesses and police stations throughout the summer. During an exchange on Tuesday, they agreed that the Black Lives Matter riots were more justified than the Capitol riot last week.
